Fall in the Lou: Dog-Friendly Pumpkin Patches, Leaf-Peeping Hikes & Latte Stops

Sweater weather is officially here, St. Louis, and your pup has been waiting all year for it. Cooler mornings, crunchy leaves, and a whole season of new smells to sniff out. Fall in the Lou is basically one big sniffari.

We spend our days out on walks and adventures all over St. Louis County and Franklin County, so we've rounded up a few of our favorite ways to soak up the season with your dog. Pumpkin patches, leaf-peeping trails, cozy latte stops, and a few safety tips to keep the fun going. Leash up and let's go! 🐾

Pick the Paw-fect Pumpkin

Here's the thing most pet parents learn the hard way: a lot of local farms don't allow dogs, especially around petting zoos and rides. So before you load up the car, check the farm's pet policy.

The good news? We have a pup-approved pick right in our backyard.

Chalily's Pumpkin Patch (Wildwood) Leashed dogs are welcome at Chalily's all season long. Even better, they're hosting Howl at the Patch on October 24 and 25, a dog-themed weekend with costumes, photo ops, and extra fun for four-legged visitors. Bust out the bandana (or the full costume) and get that perfect pumpkin pic.

Pumpkin patch tips for pups:

  • Keep the leash short in crowds and corn mazes, where people and dogs can pop around a corner.

  • Skip the petting zoo areas. Farm animals and curious noses don't always mix.

  • Bring water and a collapsible bowl. All that sniffing is thirsty work.

  • Pack poop bags and leave the patch better than you found it.

Leaf-Peeping Hikes Your Dog Will Love

You don't need to drive to the mountains for jaw-dropping fall color. Some of the best foliage in Missouri is a short drive from home. Here are our favorite trails for a tail-waggin' leaf hike (leashes required on all of them).

Castlewood State Park (Ballwin) A local legend for a reason. Climb to the bluffs for a view over a sea of orange and yellow treetops along the Meramec River, then cool off with a stroll on the flatter river trails below. Great for high-energy pups who love a good climb.

Queeny Park (Town and Country) Wooded trails for a lighter leaf walk, plus Tails & Trails, a huge off-leash dog park, for a post-hike zoomie session. Bring your own water bowl, since the water stations shut off for winter.

Lewis and Clark Trail (Weldon Spring) Heavily wooded paths with views from the bluffs above the Missouri River. Fall sunsets up here are cinematic. Best for experienced hikers and dogs with stamina.

Grant's Trail (South County) A paved, mostly flat 10-mile trail through south St. Louis County. Perfect for senior pups, puppies still building endurance, or a quick after-work walk under the changing leaves.

Hawn State Park (Ste. Genevieve County) Worth the drive. Pine forest, sandstone, and a creek winding through it all. The Whispering Pines Trail is gorgeous but more advanced, so save it for seasoned trail dogs.

Trail tip: Missouri parks typically require leashes no longer than 10 feet. Check each park's rules before you go, and keep an eye out for ticks. They don't take the fall off.

Latte Stops with Dog-Friendly Patios

Nothing says fall like a warm latte in one hand and a leash in the other. These local spots welcome pups on their patios, so you can sip while your sidekick people-watches.

Little Ireland Coffee (Pacific) A cozy Franklin County favorite on North 1st Street, serving espresso drinks, cold brew, and fresh-baked goodies since 2017. Pups are welcomed (and adored), so grab a latte and a scone after a walk through downtown Pacific.

Goshen Coffee (Soulard) A fun, kitschy patio in the old Soulard Coffee Garden space. Grab a pastry for you and a treat for your dog.

Kaldi's Coffee (multiple locations) A St. Louis staple with dog-friendly outdoor tables at many of its cafes. Easy to work into a weekend walk almost anywhere in town.

Shameless Grounds (Benton Park) A cozy neighborhood cafe in south city that welcomes dogs. Perfect after a stroll through Benton Park.

Fiddlehead Fern Cafe (Shaw) A sweet outdoor patio in the Shaw neighborhood. Pair it with a leafy walk around the block and you've got the perfect fall morning.

Cafe de Blaire (St. Louis) Coffee, bubble tea, and ice cream on the patio, plus a pup cup so your dog gets a treat too.

Zoomies Pet Cafe + Boutique (St. Louis) A coffee shop and dog park in one. You get a latte, they get the zoomies. Everybody wins.

Barista's note: Seating and pet policies can change with the weather, so give a quick call before you go. And keep the pumpkin spice for yourself. Spiced drinks, chocolate, and anything sweetened with xylitol aren't safe for dogs, so stick to a pup cup or plain whipped cream in moderation.

Fall Safety Tips for Happy Pups

All fun, no vet visits. A few seasonal things to keep on your radar:

  • Halloween candy: Chocolate, raisins, and sugar-free treats with xylitol are toxic to dogs. Keep the candy bowl up high.

  • Pumpkins: Plain cooked pumpkin is a great treat. Moldy jack-o-lanterns, raw stems, and pumpkin pie filling (spices and sugar) are not.

  • Leaf piles: Fun to jump in, but they can hide sticks, mushrooms, and critters. Give them a quick look first.

  • Ticks: They stick around well into fall. Do a full check after every hike.

  • Earlier sunsets: It gets dark fast now. Reflective gear or a light-up collar keeps evening walks safe.

  • Costumes: Make sure they fit comfortably and don't block vision, breathing, or movement.
